April 19th, 2008 - Oh No! Not Again!

Early Saturday morning, Tracey took Dan to the firestation for his first aid training.

It was on the return home, travelling up the driveway that Tracey realised that there were no chickens in the pound. They always come out to greet you and the fact that there were none in sight was not a good sign.

Sporting a very fashionable pair of pink polka-dot wellies, Tracey wandered over to the pond, with the dogs in tow, in search of the chickens.

Surrounding the little chicken house were Charlies' feathers - it was not looking good.

We know from previous experience that fox will takes it's prey and leave a pile of feathers, whilst a stoat removes the head, drinks the blood and abandons the corpse on the spot.

There was no sign of either of the Charlies or the Mables - so presumably, it had to be a fox this time.

Tracey decided to walk the perimeter of the pond and search for any remains - just like they do in CSI Miami & Cold Case - but with pink wellies!!!

Over the hedge in the field next door were the remains of a dead Charlie - still unable to ascertain for sure whether it was a stoat or a fox, the main thing was that we were chicken-less.

Whilst Indie was having a good sniff around to see who had trespassed on his patch and Tilly was greedily eating the last of the chicken poo! - with the fright they'd obviously had the previous night, there was an abundance of it!!!

Tracey then decided to check to see if any eggs had remained intact.

On lifting the hatch door to feel for eggs, Tracey discovered, with the fright of her life, our last surviving Mable who was clearly suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder! Hardly surprising though, having seen her 2 brothers and sister being murdered in cold blood!

The good news of the day (it's important to finish on a positive note) is that Dan passed his first aid test and is now accepted as a local, voluntary fireman (pompier as we say over here!) - there's just a mountain of paperwork to be filed with various administration departments (the French love beaurocracy and paperwork and they love to do it slowly!) then it's all systems go.

Mable is receiving therapy - a daily cuddle from Dan the vet - and will now be known as Gloria [Gaynor] 'cos she survived (hey hey!)
