23rd May, 2008 - A Solution To The Chicken Wire Problem Without the chicken wire to make the pound safe and with time moving on, Dan was desperate to come up with a realistic alternative so we could have new chickens very soon.
Firstly, he drove to our friend Mark's house and borrowed a small cage, about 6 x 4 foot in size.
Secondly he mocked up a design using bird cage netting over tension wire which he then pinned to stakes and buried 12 inches in the ground.
The mock-up worked and it means that we can now order the appropriate amount of netting, secure the pound and then Dan can go back to the livestock market with his shopping list!
Elsewhere in the garden, Dan planted white haricot beans which are absolutely wonderful in stews and casseroles!
Tracey spent her time tending to the 4 foot circular planter, which has a feature hydrangea - although after last years battering from the turkeys it doesn't look quite so spectacular this year!
The hydrangea was trimmed back to half it's size, leaving just the new and healthier shoots and leaves.
With a gap left from the pruning, Tracey planted some more petunias.
Very few of the flower seeds Tracey planted at the end of the winter germinated and those that did were indecipherable from weeds.
As a result, Tracey transplanted half a dozen healthy and colourful looking plants into decorative pots - only time will tell if they turn out to be flowers or just common garden weeds! View The Blog Read All Chicken Stories |
