24th June, 2008 - The Boys Are Back In Town

We got pigs today!!!

It is so wonderful to have these animals back in our garden - they are such incredible fun and always have amazing characters.

Now, Dan is not one for getting up in the morning - in fact, most mornings when the alarm goes off, the first words to come out of his mouth would make Gordon Ramsey blush!

However, today was different - in fact, it was so different that Dan actually awoke before the alarm!

At 8am, Dan had put a make-shift cage in the boot of the car, hooked up the trailer and set off to the pig farm near our friends, Dale & Andrew, live.

Given last years disaster with rare breed pigs, we decided to go for good ol' fashioned pink pigs - while not "soil association" approved, they will have an organic lifestyle while they're with us, so not a bad compromise.

Given that our pig sty looks more like a bungalow than a traditional pig ark, we decided to call our new pigs "Dick" and "Dom"

Now, it has to be said, that these 2 boys are not exactly blessed with good looks and they are identical, or they are as far as we can see. So, whoever stands on the left will be known as "Dick" and the one on the right will be called "Dom".

Once home, getting them out of the car was quite simple - Tracey simply backed the car up and Dan then lifted them out, having been shown at the pig farm the right way to carry a pig - one arm under it's belly, and the other hand holding onto it's ear.

As soon as they were in their new pound (which is over twice the size of last year), Dan had a stroke and spoke encouragingly to them both.

The boys were then free to explore their new surroundings and given that today was their first ever experience of being outside, they wasted no time in sniffing and troughing around.

In fact, they enjoyed themselves so much that they just keep grunting excitedly, then nudging each other, then troughed a little more. When they found the soggy mud patch, well, you've heard the expression - they were as happy as pigs in shit!

We absolutely love having pigs and out of every animal that we keep here, they are undoubtedly the most rewarding!
