Nov 05 - Plucking Ducks

After our initial casualties in the summer, Dan went back to the livestock market and bought reinforcements (no surprise there, I hear you say!)

So, we had another 4 ducks, who our cousins subsequently named Custard (because he was yellow), Humbug & Toffee ('cos the kids couldn't get away from the food theme) and Elliot (after the dragon in the Disney film Pete's Dragon)

In a spate of tv-chef inspired bravado, Dan stated that he was going to kill-it, cook-it, eat-it and prepare a duck dinner.

This turned out to be one of Dan's famous it'll-only-take-5-minutes moments. Plus, to be fair, all the photographs in the books make it look really easy!

After an hour, we soon realised why duck down is used to fill pillows and eiderdowns and it was at this point we wondered if there was any mileage in starting a pillow factory.

Like most things, it was interesting at the beginning but when your fingers get cramp, you've got feathers up your nose and can't see the wood for the trees (or should that be "duck for the feathers") it really did become a labourious task.

In fact, it has to be said that everyone got bored of waiting for Dan so we all buggered off to the beach without him!

Consequently, when it came to dispatching the remainder of our feathery friends we didn't think twice - we took them straight to the abbatoir!

It was money well spent - in fact, about £1.50 a bird, and they arrived home in a cardboard box and ready for the oven!
