Turkeys 06 - Move Over Bernard Matthews Following on from our turkey success of 2005 (albeit on a small scale), we decided to up the ante and not only raise them for ourselves but for neighbouring English as well.

Initially we purchased 8 turkeys and lost 2 - 1 to a bird of prey and another to some sort of turkey illness.
As the turkeys grew, we realised that come Christmas the would be too big to put in the oven. So, off Dan went to the market (little things please little minds) to buy another 6 birds. The newer birds would be younger, smaller and more likely to be oven size come the fateful day.
We soon had more people wanting turkeys than we had turkeys available (in fact one gentleman phoned up and asked if we could supply him with 30!)
The smaller turkeys were between 14-18lb and the bigger turkeys between 20-27lb.
The largest of all, and our record-breaker, was 39lb (that's plucked, gutted and ready for cooking!)
Unsurprisingly, no-one had an oven big enough so this one was jointed - more escalopes!!!
Our own Christmas dinner was not quite the organic fayre we had anticipated as, in his excitement, Dan actually sold the turkey we were keeping back for ourselves!
So we ended up having roast beef instead - not so much bootiful as "moo-tiful" View The Blog Read All Turkey Stories |
