8th September, 2008 - A "Free" Beehive

One of the items on Dan's to-do list today was to go to the bee shop and enquire about getting some more hives.

Over the weekend, Dan & Tracey had time to reflect and as a result had decided that for 2009, they should have 5 bee hives.

So, Dan went off to the shop armed with a lsit of questions about prices, timings and also about winter feeding our existing bees.

He purposely didn't take his cheque book, debit card or any cash just in case the temptation to buy the whole shop became too intense.

Therefore, imagine Tracey's surprise when Dan returned home with a brand new bee hive, not to mention winter food and organic anti-varroa medication.

Dan quickly explained that as the shop owner is retiring and closing the shop at the end of October, he was keen to get rid of stock.

And although he couldn't sell us 4 hives (3 with bees included), he did have an empty hive available (which the training bees will move into next Spring).

Dan said he'd come back next week to pay and collect the new hive, but the shop owner insisted that Dan took it now and came back next week to pay.

And on top of that, the shop owners wife gave Dan a jar of "chestnut honey" as a present as well.

The shop owners really are a very nice, warm and friendly couple who have imparted so much advice and been tolerant of Dans' (at times) silly questions. To then be allowed to take home a new hive with various accessories without paying just re-emphasises the difference in our way of life now to our previous city jobs.

And yes - we will be going back next week to pay for the hive!
