25th September, 2008 - A Power Breakfast Years ago in our corporate lives, we regularly attended "power breakfast" meetings and although we didn't exactly re-engineer a major business process, we did have a great start to the day by catching up with our friends Dale & Andrew over a coffee and baguette first thing.
Following the disappointing apple harvest yesterday, we decided that we would go to a local apple farm and pick our own.
There are plenty of orchards to choose from where we are, as this region produces virtually all of the apples sold in France.
So, armed with a couple of crates, we selected an orchard and having tasted what was available, we decided to pick Jonagared variety.
In stark contrast to yesterday, in 20 minutes we had picked 27 kilos of apples and at €0.75 per kilo we not only had fresh produce, but at a fraction of the cost of the supermarket.
These apples were destined for the freezer to make apple pies and crumbles throughout winter and the only thing standing between the apples in the crate and the freezer was the task of peeling, coring and slicing.
While we were at the orchard, the cashier was keen to try and sell us a special gadget that greatly assists in this process and so after a quick power meeting in the car, we decided to purchase one...
...and boy, we were not disappointed.
This wonderful little gadget will peel, core and slice an apple in one go and takes just a few seconds.
In fact, things got a little competitive and Dan & Tracey decided to see who could be the quickest in getting 4 apples from crate to freezer bag.
First up was Tracey who managed an impressive 1 minute 31 seconds.
Then, it was Dan's turn, who - let's be honest - does not like to be beaten, especially when gadgets are involved!
With peel flying off of the machine, apple cores shooting off the end and Dans' hands a complete blur he was absolutely...
...gutted to have lost by 3 seconds!!!
So, with Dan being a rather sore loser and wanting a re-match, Tracey had to stop her head from swelling and carry the bags of sliced apples down to the freezer.
In fact, if the truth be known, the reason that Tracey didn't want a re-match was because she was enjoying gloating so much!
Consequently, we're going picking again in a couple of weeks for Granny Smiths and Dan is determined not to lose next time.
