June 07 - Worn Down At Last!

Like most men, if Dan wants something he goes on and on about it until Tracey surrenders!

Well, because we have sheep in the field next door, and to be fair, lamb is our favourite meat and costs an absolute fortune here, Dan has wanted to have our own sheep.

Given Indie's love affair for the wooly dog and Tilly's tendancy to roll in sheep poo whenever she can there was just no way we could keep sheep in our garden.

Undetered, Dan even went to the local mayors office to enquire about renting a patch of land next door but the red-tape that would've been involved didn't justify having our own lamb chops.

As luck would have it, a couple of good friends of ours,Gilly & Geoff, purchased a small field next to their house with the intention of keeping a few sheep.

Very kindly, they said that they would look after a sheep for us. On top of that, their own neighbour had a couple of pregnant ewes and so they could even source the lamb.

With the prospect of (a) shutting Dan up (b) having our own lamb chops and (c) the sheep being kept well away from unwanted doggie attention Tracey finally gave in! (Plus, Dan had promised her a new pair of wellies!!!)

Having secured a lamb and field, the next big issue was to name him.

After a while we eventually came up with the name Murray as in Murray Mint.

He did have a couple of other sheep to keep him company, so he wasn't alone.

Eventually the day came for Murray to be slaughtered and butchered which was expertly done by Gilly & Geoff's neighbour, Serge.

Like all the animals we have kept, the taste and texture of the meat is far, far superior than intensively farmed meat and we've already put in our order for another lamb for 2008!

We've mentioned this before, but lamb is a really expensive meat over here and so, despite it's amazing taste, we do limit ourselves to only eating it on "high days and holidays".

Our friends Dale & Andrew have an amazing recipe for a Morrocan dish using the shoulder and if we ask nicely, I'm sure they'll let us put it in our recipe section.
