March 5th, 2008 - Bee-ginners They say that "time flies" but just a couple of days ago we toyed with the idea of keeping a hive of bees.
Two days later, and the "bees for dummies" book hasn't even arrived from Amazon yet - but this hasn't stopped Dan from finding a specialist bee shop just 10 minutes away!
So, this afternoon he popped off to the shop, with French/English dictionary in hand and a blank cheque in his pocket!
His parting words were, "don't worry, I won't buy anything"
90 minutes later, Dan returned grinning from ear to ear and put on his "puppy dog eyes" look (not attractive!).
Lo and behold, he no longer had the cheque!
But, give him his due, he spent a whopping €12 by enrolling on a bee-keeping course...
...he also came home with a shopping list totalling a lot more than €12!
The bee course takes place over 7 Saturday afternoons and involves keeping a mini hive in a nearby forest with expert tuition from a local commercial beekeeper.
After each Saturday's lesson, the idea is that you then return home and practice what you've learned on your main hive in the garden.
We're going back to the shop next Saturday to buy our hive and order the bees - which gives Dan just over a week to get all of the outstanding jobs done around the garden (like re-doing the bird pound to make it stoat proof!)
This will also give us enough time to create a spread-bet on how many stings Dan'll get this year!!!
Any advance on 10???
